The History of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Kolobrzeg

church-night-moon

The history of The Seventh Day Adventist Church in Kołobrzeg begins with Ryszard Dyduła and his wife, who came to Kołobrzeg from Kraków in 1965. That same year, they were baptized by pastor Eugeniusz Szworak, who was one of the pioneers in Poland after the second World War. During a period of two years time, Mr. and Mrs. Dyduła went regularly twice a month to the church in Szczecin. In 1967 they began going to Świerzyno (near Koszalin) for services. Then during a period of several years, they went to the newly opened church in Konikowo until the church purchased the center of recreation and health in Grzybowo. In the beginning, the center was run by Mr. and Mrs. Ciuk. In summer 1977, they left Kołobrzeg and in their place came another family – Maria and Zygmunt Hajzer. That same year, the group increased by one person from Trzebiatów making 8 people. The next year, three more people were baptized in the Baltic Sea by pastor Kazimierz Tomczyk. At the end of the 1983, Halina and Stanisław Kaleta took over the Center in Grzybowo.

In 1983 Krzysztof Kudzia, the next pastor of Kołobrzeg’s church, was baptized during a camp-meeting in Wisła. In 1984 that same small group numbering over ten people evolved into an independent church. Through voting, the elder of that church became the initiator of Adventism in Kołobrzeg. The same year, the church started systematic mission work, including: proclaiming the gospel from door to door, evangelistic meetings and spreading Christian literature.

One year later, the baptism of two new people, Marzena Surma and a doctor Andrzej Schulz, took place in Wisła. Not long after that event, the next two people were baptized: Robert Dyduła and Dariusz Jankowski. In 1985 Irena Dyduła was also baptized. She went through two surgeries because of the cancer in the brain. Though this created difficulties, she continued with the baptism by immersion.

At the end of the eighties and the beginning of nineties, Mirosław and Krzysztof Kudzia spread the gospel among hippies in Kołobrzeg. As a result of their work Chrystian Skoroszewski was baptized in 1987. His baptism had far-reaching repercussions, among his hippie-friends. As a result of this event, Jacek Walczyk (who also had been going to the meetings) was baptized a few years later. After that, Kołobrzeg’s church increased to about a dozen young people. Some of them began to study at the SDA Seminar in Podkowa Leśna. During that period Krzysztof Kudzia was ordained as a pastor. He was working from September 15th, 1987 until May 1, 1991, when he moved to Gdańsk. Since then the church was under the leadership of Wiesław Daniszewski from Koszalin, step-son of a former elder from Koszalin’s church. Then pastoral duties took up Aleksander Baron from Australia (in 1992-1994, and then 1995/96). In 1995 the charge of the Centrum in Grzybowo took over a young couple named Krystyna and Waldemar Stanisławscy. Since 1995 the church at Kołobrzeg has been in the care of Jacek Igła, a visiting pastor from Koszalin.

The 1996 year brought new changes because several young people came to Kołobrzeg. These people were a full of initiative, and their activities favorably affected Kołobrzeg’s church. One of them, Mathew Britten, came from Australia and graduated from the SDA Seminar in Podkowa Leśna. He came to Kołobrzeg with his wife – Karolina. Since then Matthew has had charge of the musical part of the service. He was also running home groups, and he worked as a teacher at an Adventist School called “School by the Sea”. (Actually: The Institute of Foreign Language “School by the Sea”).

In January 1997, a new elder was chosen – Tomasz Sulej. The person responsible for Bible study (Sabbath school) during the service became Maciej Strzyżewski. After some time, Andrzej Jacewicz took over this position, and he’s been holding this function until today.

The services were held at Izabela Wrzos’ flat on Jedności Narodowej street between 1995-1996. Then between 1991-1997 at the flat of Mr. and Mrs. Kudzia on Waryńskiego Zbór 98street. In 1997 the church rented a room at Social Primary School on Radomska street 22. It was not until 1999 when the church decided to move the service to the center of health and rest in Grzybowo on Plażowa street 19. The service has continued there until today.

The Kołobrzeg’s church is still struggling with the lack of a place for service. In the beginning, it was enough to have only private flats for service. However, recently our church membership has increased, and we can no longer afford to function as a “home church”. Our parish has made efforts for many years to purchase a building, but unfortunately this matter is not easy. So finally we have decided to rent some bigger hall in a public place, but still It is only a temporary solution.

The representatives of our church have applied to the local government with requests for help. We soon realized that this matter is more complicated than we had expected. Eventually the local Government allowed us to participate in the auctioning of a building on Budowlana street. Our parish didn’t have ready cash. However, thanks to the help of other churches, the SDA West Conference and The Polish Union Conference we managed to purchase a tenement on anDzieci 98 auction in the downtown. Our intention was to renovate that building but after legal evaluation it appeared that it requires a bigger investment. The roof needs to be replaced, there are a several cracks in the main walls and the building doesn’t have wiring and hydraulic installation. There also isn’t any central heating. The renovation of this building will certainly take a long time. At this moment, we are looking for some sponsors who will help us to collect some funds for a major overhaul.

The tenement house mentioned above can be found in the picture below. As we can see its location is superb. The Budowlana street is part of the old town.

Budowlana 30 street – This is our building. There is a bike shop on the ground flour – this is not part of our property.

The view from Rzeczna street. This is the end of Budowlana street. This street is a dead end. So we have an excellent place for parking.

Kołobrzeg’s SDA church is concerned about the needs of modern humanity. Part of its mission is to win over young people for Jesus Christ. Our community consists of about 40 members. Our church was made smaller by migration (Matthew Britten with his wife Karolina went to Australia, Halina Kaleta is currently living in Belgium. The other members have moved to Karlino, Elbląg, Słupsk, Stargard Szczeciński, and some of them, unfortunately, left our community). The average age of the members in our church is 30 years. Although the members of our church are different ages, there is a knowledge which connects them – the hope of the second coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who is going to take all of his children to the Kingdom of Heaven.

We invite you again to visit our service every Saturday at 10:00 o’clock.
